Express Entry – Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is one of the most popular immigration programs under Express Entry Canada. It is specifically designed for individuals who have gained skilled work experience in Canada and want to apply for permanent residence (PR). If you are currently working in Canada on a valid work permit, the CEC may be one of the fastest pathways to becoming a permanent resident. Many applicants assume that simply working in Canada for one year guarantees eligibility. However, CEC eligibility requirements are detailed and must be carefully reviewed to avoid refusal.

Who Can Apply Under CEC?

To qualify under the Canadian Experience Class, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Have at least 12 months of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in Canada.
  • The work experience must be obtained within the last three years.
  • The job must fall under TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 of the National Occupation Classification (NOC).
  • Work must have been legally authorized under a valid work permit.
  • Meet the required language proficiency level.
Eligible work permits may include:
  • LMIA-based work permits
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
  • Spousal Open Work Permit
  • International Experience Canada (IEC)
  • Free Trade Agreement work permits

Language Requirements:

Language proficiency is a mandatory requirement under the Express Entry Canadian Experience Class.
Minimum language scores depend on your occupation category:
  • TEER 0 or TEER 1 occupations → Minimum CLB 7
  • TEER 2 or TEER 3 occupations → Minimum CLB 5
Accepted language tests for Canada PR include:
  • IELTS General Training
  • CELPIP General
  • TEF Canada (French)
  • TCF Canada (French)
Language test results must be valid at the time you submit your permanent residence application

Canadian Experience Class (CEC) Work Experience Requirements

Under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), the type of work permit used to gain Canadian experience does not directly determine eligibility. Work permits may have been obtained through:
  • Free Trade Agreements
  • Positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program
  • Spousal or dependent open work permits (international students or skilled workers)
  • International Experience Canada (Working Holiday) programs

Work Permit Conditions and Work Experience Verification

Applicants who worked under an LMIA-based work permit must demonstrate compliance with all permit conditions by proving they worked for the employer listed on the LMIA, received the approved salary, worked the required number of hours, performed the job duties specified in the LMIA, and worked at the authorized location. Supporting documents such as employment reference letters, T4 slips, pay stubs, employment contracts, tax records, and, when necessary, additional proof like emails, schedules, or work orders may be required to verify genuine Canadian work experience.
For open work permit holders, including PGWP holders, international student dependents, and International Experience Canada participants, the work experience must fall under eligible NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations. It is important to understand that job titles do not determine eligibility; instead, IRCC evaluates the actual job duties performed to confirm qualification under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) requirements. Proper classification of work duties is essential for successful permanent residence applications
