Child Sponsorship Program (Under 18 & Dependent Children)

The Canada Child Sponsorship Program is an important part of Canada’s Family Class Immigration system. This program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their dependent children so they can obtain Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) and live together with their family members in Canada. The Canadian government strongly supports family reunification as a key immigration priority, believing that children who grow up in a supportive family environment have better opportunities for social stability, education, and future economic success within Canadian society. This sponsorship program generally applies to biological children, legally adopted children, and in certain situations, stepchildren or children under legal guardianship.

Who Can Sponsor a Child to Canada?

To sponsor a child, the sponsor must meet Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) eligibility requirements and demonstrate a genuine ability to support the child after they arrive in Canada. Sponsorship is a legal commitment to ensure the child’s well-being and basic living needs are properly met.
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada
  • Provide proof of financial ability to support the child’s basic needs
  • Sign a sponsorship agreement commitment to provide financial and emotional support

Who Qualifies as a Dependent Child?

A dependent child is generally:
  • Under 22 years of age
  • Not married or in a common-law relationship
Children aged 22 years and older may still qualify if they:
  • Have a physical or mental condition that prevents them from supporting themselves financially
IRCC may request medical documentation or supporting evidence if dependency is claimed based on a medical or disability condition.

Children Who Can Be Sponsored

Biological Children

  • Must have legal proof of parent-child relationship
  • Birth certificates are required
  • DNA evidence may be requested by IRCC in some cases

Adopted Children

  • Canada has a separate immigration pathway for adopted children
  • International adoption must follow Canadian provincial adoption laws
  • Must comply with international adoption rules such as the Hague Adoption Convention (if applicable)
  • Proof of legal adoption and guardianship approval may be required

Stepchildren

  • Can be sponsored if the sponsor is legally married or in a recognized common-law relationship with the child’s parent
  • Proper legal documentation proving the relationship must be submitted

Financial Responsibility of Sponsors

Sponsors must show financial ability to support the child by having stable income or employment. They must be able to provide basic needs such as housing, food, clothing, education, and healthcare. As part of the application, sponsors sign a financial undertaking agreement, making them legally responsible for supporting the child after arrival in Canada.

Processing times for Child Sponsorship applications

Processing times for child sponsorship applications vary depending on the country of residence and the complexity of the application. On average, processing usually takes between 6 to 12 months. Some applications may take longer if additional document verification, medical examinations, or background and security checks are required.
